Again, the slowdown also takes away from the game's fast-paced fun, and the static backgrounds are washed out. The sound gets no help from the dismal, tinny sampling or the few announcers' voiceovers that were left in. Even the slams and thuds sound cheap. Controlling the wrestlers is about the same as in the other games, and the moves are identical, but the slowdown makes things difficult.

You never know if a combo is complete until the last slow movement takes place. WWF Arcade has more going for it than this poor game. Buy the Genesis or 32X or even the PlayStation versions, but sweep this one under the mat. WWF Wrestlemania thunders from the arcade to the Genesis, squeezing even the hefty Yokozuna into the slim confines of a bit game.

Some sounds and graphical touches were left in the locker room, but WWF's flamboyant action makes for undeniable fun. One player can pursue the WWF Title, a tough fight that eventually pits you against eight wrestlers at once, or the Intercontinental Title, an easier bout. Two players can grapple head-to-head or work together against a tag team of all the other wrestlers. This impressive lineup of modes brings enjoyable variety to the ring, and the wild moves add to the fun.

Each wrestler can pull off an eye-popping array of punches, kicks, throws, holds, and reversals. The controls respond just fine, but a six-button pad's a must unless you're a proficient finger gymnast. After a while, though, the gameplay feels a bit long on flash and short on substance. Furious button pressing often yields impressive results, and fighting pros will fire off the moves and combos much too easily. Some gamers may eventually tire of this lack of depth, but there's definitely enough raucous fun to keep most players hopping back into the ring.

Graphically, the enormous digitized sprites and smooth animation will instantly impress you, despite the excessive graininess. Even worse, slowdown stalls the action on crowded screens, but these flaws don't interfere much. Humorous commentary from WWF announcers Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler lends ringside authenticity, but they sound like they're calling the fight from underwater.

At least the grunts and slams come across clearly. This game should even appeal to fighting pros looking for fast, furious -- and somewhat shallow -- fun. Sometimes the action will get out of hand and move outside the ring. Wrestling matches are timed, and each opponent has an energy meter, which depletes with every hit sustained.

If 2 players are chosen, you can kick the crap out of each other or build a tag team try choosing the same wrestler - it's kinda fun when there are three Yokozunas in the same ring. You can compete for the intercontinental or the heavyweight title - not much difference really - except that in intercontinental you start fighting 1 guy and end up with three opponents for the grand finale. On the heavyweight level you start with two opponents and end up fighting a battle royal.

Now I have some serious crash - paw - ouch - boinging to do!!! Enjoy the game! In contrast to some earlier duds such as Judge Dredd, Acclaim got itself together this time around to deliver an excellent conversion that rivals non-PC versions e. The wrestlers are all digitized and nicely detailed about half the screen large , making it easy to perform moves, and a lot of fun to see the results.. The variety of moves you can perform is one of the game's best features.

Even the common moves such as a punch are different from character to character. For example, while one wrestler's super-punch may be a smashing forearm to his opponent's head, another's will be a powerful round-house. Special moves are harder to pull off, but always spectacular to watch, with plenty of visual effects and bone-rattling sound effects.

With a four-button gamepad probably the best control method , there's enough challenge involved in learning and performing the moves to keep the game interesting, but not overly so. The only problem with WWF Wrestlemania that hurts its long-term play value is the limited number of wrestlers. The tournament mode has you facing off against the same eight wrestlers you can choose from, sometimes even pitting your character against himself.

Some new faces including "mystery" characters similar to arcade fighting games would have made the game much more fun. Also, the 2D side view makes the game look a bit too two-dimensional and characters like paper cutouts, although character graphics are detailed enough to carry the game. If you are a wrestling fan or just like fighting games in general, WWF Wrestlemania is a must-have. The game looks good, feels great, and above all - it's a blast to play. Highly recommended!
